AHAs and BHAs are common exfoliating skincare ingredients that offer numerous benefits. This week on The Skin Edit, we're exploring the difference between AHAs and BHAs.
Alpha-Hydroxy Acids are water-soluble acids that work on the surface of the skin to address uneven tone, fine lines, and surface texture. AHAs dissolve the bonds that keep dead skin cells stuck to the top layer of your skin that can cause rough patches and discoloration. They also stimulate collagen production, improving the appearance of fine lines and aging over time.
Glycolic Acid
Glycolic acid has the smallest molecule size of the AHAs, so it penetrates the skin and clears out dead skin cells, stimulating collagen production. It's incredibly smoothing, working as both preventative care for fine lines and as a treatment to firm the skin.
Lactic Acid
Lactic acid is a gentle and hydrating AHA that works on the surface of the skin to fade dark spots and smooth skin texture without irritation.
Mandelic Acid
Mandelic acid is also extremely gentle, its large molecular size making it ideal for sensitive skin. It helps balance the complexion and clear breakouts.
Beta-Hydroxy Acids are oil-soluble acids that work in the pores to dislodge trapped dead skin cells and clear excess sebum. They help control oil production, work to dissolve blackheads, and calm active breakouts.
Salicylic Acid
Salicylic acid is the BHA widely used in skincare for oil and breakout control. It dissolves into the skin's oils and breaks down bonds between dead skin cells within the pores.
